From April 1 to June 30, 2021, with the support of the German Federal Found EVZ, we implemented the project “Needs-oriented, targeted assistance to victims of National Socialism in Ukraine, who has limited mobility amid the coronavirus pandemic.” At the start of the project, we contacted the central office of USVZN in order to get contacts of their branches in the cities of Ukraine, because we needed to find out the individual needs of each of the USVZN members. However, we took information only about some local organizations and communicated with their leaders (Druzhkovka, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Zaporozhye, Mukachevo, Chernigov, Lutsk, Kiev, Kharkov, Nikolaev, Kremenchug, Lvov). We faced the problem that many of them do not have a computer or access to the Internet, so almost all negotiations were conducted by phone, and applications were submitted by regular mail and by hand.
When we received the lists, we began to prepare for the purchase of goods, but even here it did not go smoothly, because not all elderly people were able to correctly formulate their needs. For example, some people didn’t see the difference between a corset and a bandage or incorrectly indicated the size of diapers, etc.
Nevertheless, we purchased and delivered the required amount of goods. In total, these are 2,902 items. We will not list each of them, but we are very glad that we were able to provide the elderly people – former victims of Nazism with the necessary funds.
